The Grantham Environmental Education Centre at the Karoo National Park in Beaufort West
The Grantham Environmental Education Centre is situated 40km from the main gate on the western side of the Karoo National Park. The facility was built to allow for real-life learning experiences and provides an environmental education programme which includes outdoor activities and guided walks tailored to the needs of visiting groups.
The facility is offered to groups and is specially designed to cater for a wide range of environmental topics and lessons. Groups who stay overnight for one or more nights, engage in an intensive environmental education programme together with walking trails.
The centre is also open for Educators who may wish to present their own environmentally-themed programmes, although bookings are essential.
The facility is able to house fifty people in nine bedrooms with separate ablution blocks. The environment surrounding the centre is used as nature’s classroom, while the centre itself has a lecture room equipped with audio-visual aids to assist in the presentation process.
The kitchen is fully equipped with an electric stove and gas stove, a fridge, freezer, urn, crockery and cutlery for 50 people. A braai-lapa provides an ideal facility for outdoor or night-time cooking on an open fire.
